Sussex Home Improvement Agency is a Community Interest Company. Sussex HIA provides guidance and support to vulnerable, older and disabled central Sussex residents to help enable them to live healthily and independently in safe, secure, warm and accessible homes. Whilst Sussex HIA was only set up in 2017 the parent company has been supporting older and disabled people with housing related issues since 2009.

Sussex HIA helps residents to ‘Stay Independent’ by helping with access to local housing related services in response to a person’s needs.

Professional help is provided with organising ‘Home Adaptations and Improvements’.  Support is available with the design, planning, consultation and build process.  Staff provide advice on the type of adaptations and current funding sources; such as the disabled facilities grant.

New client referrals are welcomed from all sources; from the person, their family or from other service providers such as care professionals.  Sussex HIA prides itself on improving the health and wellbeing of vulnerable, older and disabled people.

What we do

Sussex HIA provides a variety of services that supports vulnerable, older and disabled central Sussex residents to live healthily and independently in safe, secure, warm and accessible homes.  Sussex HIA looks to be central to all local housing related services to allow support to be offered to clients, families and carer or support professionals with the aim of  ‘Creating healthy homes for independent living’.  Sussex HIA is overseen by an Advisory Board who look help ensure high service standards.

Sussex HIA helps residents to ‘Stay Independent by helping with access to local housing related services in response to a person’s needs.  We also provide professional help with organising ‘Home Adaptations and Improvements.  Support is available with the design, planning, consultation and build process.  Staff provide advice on the type of adaptations and current funding sources; such as the disabled facilities grant.    As part of Sussex HIAs support for front line officers a number of Training Courses have been developed.

Where we work

Sussex HIA operates from Haywards Heath and provides services within Central Sussex.  Currently services are offered in the Districts of Mid Sussex and Horsham.  This covers a large area and takes in the towns of Horsham, Pulborough, Billingshurst, Steyning, Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill and East Grinstead.  Mid Sussex had a population of 139,860 and Horsham 132,900.

Eligibility

Sussex HIA accepts referrals on behalf of any vulnerable central Sussex resident, but the following groups are important, particularly people who are:

  • Aged over 70
  • Who have a low income with children under 5
  • With a long-term condition such as; respiratory or cardiovascular or autoimmune disease
  • With dementia, a disability or severe mental health illness or learning disability
  • Who have fallen or are concerned about falling
  • Who live in a cold and draughty home

We welcome all enquiries regardless of financial status.

Each service will also have some eligibility rules and Sussex HIA can provide you
with more information about these as there may be some small charges.
